Trotz widriger Umstände

This work is not an outside observation of protest, but a testimony from within. Since 2019 I have photographed demonstrations in Germany, moving over the years from documenting to participating. In 2025, with the rise of the far right and the simultaneous weakening of progressive politics, neutrality was no longer possible. This project emerged from that urgency.

The photographs do not aim to explain or illustrate. They avoid the obvious signs and slogans that dominate media coverage. Instead, they focus on details—fragments that reveal vulnerability, solidarity, and confrontation. These are not symbols but traces of lived resistance.

The form of the work mirrors its content. Presented as a leporello, it denies the comfort of white space or linear narration. Images bleed into each other, fold lines cut through bodies, and the sequence creates pairings and rhythms that echo the fluidity and repetition of protest itself. Large-scale banner prints extend this logic into the exhibition space, referencing the material culture of demonstrations—portable, collective, and temporary.

At its core, the project insists that photography can be more than documentation. It can be a practice of solidarity, a refusal of neutrality, a counter-image to dominant narratives. In a political climate where right-wing discourse grows louder and emancipatory struggles are silenced, these images do not claim objectivity. They take sides. They embrace the noise, the friction, the uncertainty of resistance—because that is where change begins.

It was also presented as an exhibition at Hochschule München
